The story is full of adventure, captivating and beautifully written. Above all, it describes the sensitivity and the touching innocence of the horse, expressed by its goodwill towards humans despite misunderstanding their aims. The physical and moral suffering of horses because of the carelessness of riders, have appeared to me extremely close to the way I perceive horses….This animal’s mind is often full of conflicting messages. He is both proud and at the same time submits to authority. He appears so indifferent to humans but can be troubled by human behaviour, whether brutal or caring…
The author, through his critique of the abrupt and simplistic way horses are trained, including by some horsemen as famous as the “men in black” (Cadre Noir), gives us a glimpse of another type of riding, fine and light, an art built upon a flawless technique, love and respect for the horse.
A short story immersed in poetry, moving, where two worlds so different yet so close oppose each other. The horse’s humility often faces the unhealthy ambition of men.
